Conor McGinn visited Tesco in Haydock on Friday to meet staff and volunteers as they collected donations for local foodbanks.
The initiative is run in partnership with the Trussel Trust and collects the food for St Helens foodbank.
The latest figures show that since opening in 2012 over 12,200 people in St Helens have been fed by the foodbank and in the last 12 months alone over 2000 children.
Commenting Conor said:
“I would like to pay tribute to the amazing work those Trussell Trust and local foodbanks do. And I want to say thank you to Tesco and local staff for supporting this important initiative. If it was not for the generosity of local people I dread to think what would happen to those who need this support.
“It is not right that so many people are having to rely on foodbanks to feed themselves and their children.
“It is high time the Government recognises the impact cuts are having on families in my constituency and across the UK. More needs to be done to ensure that working families can afford to feed themselves.”хЪ
